UK to Italy
Removals from the UK to Italy
Two decisions shape an Italian move: how the vehicle gets over the mountains, and whether it is allowed anywhere near your front door when it arrives.
Over the Alps, or round them
Through the Alps
Mont Blanc or Fréjus from France, or the Swiss tunnels. Direct, and the obvious choice for Milan, Turin and the northern cities — weather and vehicle restrictions permitting.
Round the coast
Down the Rhône, along the Riviera and in past Ventimiglia. Longer on the map, and sometimes the better answer when the Alpine routes are awkward or the destination is Liguria and the coast.
The part nobody mentions
Restricted-traffic zones
- Most historic centres are restricted-traffic zones, and cameras enforce them.
- Access is arranged through the comune, in advance, for a window on a named day.
- Where access is not granted, the job becomes a shuttle: a small vehicle in and out from a legal holding point.
- A firm that has not mentioned any of this before quoting you has not looked at your address.
North, centre and south
The north — Milan, Turin, the lakes, the Veneto — is mostly apartment work. Lift dimensions and courtyard access decide the method, and a lot of it is job-related rather than retirement.
The centre — Tuscany, Umbria, Le Marche — is where the restored farmhouse moves live. Long unmade approaches, stone stairs, and doorways sized for furniture nobody makes any more. We survey these in person wherever we sensibly can.
The south is the longest road run we do into Italy, and the one that most rewards a shared load and an early start on the paperwork.
Collecting from anywhere in the UK
No base town, no collection radius. The vehicle comes to you, and the journey is the same from there whichever corner of the country you started in.
Our sister site italy-removals.co.uk is built for this corridor on its own and covers the regions and cities in far more depth than one page can. If Italy is the only destination you care about, start there.
UK to Italy — common questions
What does Italy need on the paperwork?
A codice fiscale, proof of the Italian address, evidence you are transferring residence rather than importing goods to sell, and a detailed inventory that matches the load. The declaration is built from the survey inventory and lodged before the vehicle travels.
What is a ZTL and will it affect me?
A zona a traffico limitato — a restricted-traffic zone covering most historic centres, camera-enforced. If your address is inside one, access has to be arranged with the comune in advance for a specific window, or the delivery runs as a shuttle from a legal holding point. Either way it belongs in the plan, not in a surprise on the day.
Do you go to the south and the islands?
Mainland Italy by road, the full length of it. Sicily and Sardinia add a sea leg and a different set of arrangements — ask, and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right firm rather than finding out halfway.
Alps or coast — do I get a say?
You get told which one the quote assumes and why. The choice comes down to the destination, the vehicle, the season and what the Alpine routes are doing. It is our call, but it is not a secret.
Is a shared load available to Italy?
Yes, and on a route this long it takes meaningful cost out. The trade-off is scheduling, because the vehicle has to suit every consignment on it. We quote dedicated and shared side by side.
Moving to Italy?
Send both addresses and a rough inventory. If the Italian address is in a historic centre, say so — that is the first thing we check.
